Better questions. Clearer understanding.
Look beyond a projected return.
A return figure tells only part of the story. Ask what assumptions support it, whether costs are included, how losses could occur and whether any illustration is hypothetical.
Be cautious of claims that combine unusually high returns with little or no risk. No projection can remove uncertainty, and historic results are not a reliable guide to future performance.
Time horizon and access matter.
Money needed for near-term commitments has a different purpose from money set aside for a distant goal. Consider how a loss or a delay in accessing funds would affect your plans.
Before making a commitment, ask about withdrawal conditions, notice periods, restrictions and potential charges. A stated investment value does not necessarily mean funds can be accessed immediately.
Understand the currency dimension.
An investment’s currency and your everyday spending currency may differ. Exchange-rate changes can increase or reduce the value you receive when measured in your home currency.
Choosing USD or GBP on an application identifies a preference; it does not remove exchange-rate exposure. Consider how currency movements could affect both your original capital and any potential return.
Verify before you commit.
Confirm the legal identity of a provider and check relevant permissions using the appropriate regulator’s official register. Ask for written terms and an explanation of fees, risks and any claimed protection.
